With over 450 entries County-wide, young artists K-12 submitted their art work
to the 2024 Student Art Contest, sponsored by the Tehama County Arts Council. The theme was bees and how vital they are to life, or a personal statement including the word bee, like bee strong, or bee wise, or bee authentic. Media used included watercolor, acrylics, ink, leather, graphite, and mixed media.
Schools participating were Corning High, Sacred Heart, Lassen View, Richfield, Flournoy, Kirkwood, Gerber, Vista, Berrendos, Lincoln Street, Antelope, Jackson Heights, Vina, Woodson Elementary, Di’z Art Instruction and Metteer.
A reception for the winners was held on May 11, at the Tehama Arts Gallery 328 Oak Street in Red Bluff, with $770 in prizes awarded including $100 for the Best of Theme. All winners received a variety of art supplies to encourage their adventures in art.
Best of Theme for all divisions was won by Grace Bickers of Vista School for a graphite close-up of a bee.
Division 1 (grades K-2) winners were Eleanor Staton from Lassen View, Destiny Gritts,Henry Cervantes and Britany Munguia from Metteer and Matt Roman from Sacred Heart.
Division 2 (grades 3-5) winners were Margaux King from Di’z Art Instruction, Emma Gallow from Kirkwood, Justin’s Johnson from Metteer, Abbygail Madrigal from Lassen View, and Josiah Carrillo from Sacred Heart.
Division 3 (grades 6-8) winners were Christy Castor from Flournoy, Haiden Forsythe and Anna Palermo from Lassen View and Natalee Baker and Maleeyah Vicuna from Vista.
Division 4 (grades 9-12) winners were Arturo Miguel-Alcaide, Ariana Naranjo, Gabriella Aleman from Corning High and Kailey Miller from Di’z Art Instruction.
It's been found that children who engage in the arts of all sorts; visual art, drama, music, dance, consistently score higher on SAT tests and report better mental health. It improves physical and mental development and is an excellent tool for developing problem solving skills.
